Tiny Paws, Big Journey

One unforgettable rescue mission carried some of the smallest passengers imaginable across more than a thousand miles toward safety and new beginnings.

Volunteer pilots Michael Nuzback and Daniel Baumel took to the skies on a Freedom Flight spanning 1,093 miles from Fairfield to Kingsport and Manassas. On board were 23 kittens and cats along with 21 dogs, each leaving overcrowded shelters behind for the chance at a better life.

For many of the tiny kittens aboard the flight, this journey marked the first step toward love, comfort, and the possibility of forever homes. Crates filled with curious faces and sleepy little paws transformed the aircraft into a flying lifeline for dozens of vulnerable animals.

This mission was made possible through the dedication of compassionate shelter and rescue partners who worked together to ensure these animals received the futures they deserved. Special thank you to Washington County Johnson City Animal Shelter, A Home Of Their Own Animal Rescue, BARRK, Charles County Animal Care Center, Furever Haven, and Rise Above Animal Rescue for their partnership and commitment to saving lives.

Since 2015, Pilots To The Rescue has saved more than 6,700 at-risk animals from euthanasia, but missions like this served as a reminder that there are still countless lives waiting for help. Every mile flown brought another animal closer to safety, healing, and home.
