The Mother’s Day Missions They Will Never Forget

For Sophie, motherhood never paused, even when her own life hung in the balance.

The gentle mama dog arrived at a crowded shelter critically ill, battling both heartworm disease and parvovirus. While her body fought two life-threatening illnesses, Sophie never stopped caring for her puppies. Through every moment of fear and exhaustion, her focus remained on the little lives depending on her.

Thankfully, Sophie received the emergency medical care she desperately needed. Slowly, hope replaced heartbreak as she began to recover alongside her young family.

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Sophie and her puppies left the shelter behind and boarded a Freedom Flight toward safety and a brighter future. Pilots Stephen Nur and Heath Masters transported 23 dogs and puppies, along with 3 kittens, across 1,356 miles spanning Fairfield, Asheville, and Poughkeepsie.

This mission was made possible through the compassion and teamwork of countless people who refused to let these animals be forgotten. Shelter partners and rescue teams came together to ensure Sophie and so many others received the second chance they deserved.

Sophie’s story was a reminder that a mother’s love endures even in the darkest moments and that sometimes healing begins when an entire village steps forward to help.
