Our Super Bowl of Second Chances, 14 Underdogs, One Unforgettable Win
For Pilots To The Rescues, this transport felt like our own Super Bowl victory.
Fourteen remarkable dogs were flown to Maryland and New Jersey, a full cabin of underdogs whose stories reminded us exactly why this work matters so deeply. Among them were pittie mixes so often overlooked, a devoted mom and her pups beginning their next chapter together, and a brave amputee who showed us what resilience truly looks like. Every seat on this flight was filled with hope.
Charles was one of those unforgettable faces. He entered the shelter with a shattered right leg and very little information about his past. What we did know was that he was in pain, frightened, and in urgent need of help. After everything he endured, Charles became a tripod, and the videos from his early days showed just how much courage it took for him to reach this moment. His journey from injury to independence was a powerful reminder that even when life changes in an instant, a future full of possibility can still be waiting.
Honey’s story touched every heart involved in this mission. She arrived as a stray, gentle and soft-eyed, carrying far more than anyone could see at first glance. When her leg wound was examined more closely, radiographs revealed that Honey had been shot. Thankfully, her bone was not damaged, and with aggressive antibiotics and careful bandage changes, her injury continued to heal steadily. She kept full use of her leg, even while her activity had to remain limited to protect her recovery. Despite everything she endured, Honey remained loving, calm, and deeply affectionate. She walked beautifully on a leash, preferred quiet outings, and soaked up every cuddle and belly rub offered to her. She shared space well with other dogs, kept a remarkably clean kennel, and made it very clear that what she wanted most was simply to be close to people. Honey was already looking ahead to a life filled with comfort, kindness, and the love she so freely gave.
This flight carried more than dogs; it carried second chances. It carried courage, healing, and the promise of something better for fourteen deserving souls who had already survived so much.
We are deeply grateful to our partners who helped make this life-changing transport possible: Project Freedom Ride, Edgefield County Animal Care and Control, East Greenwich Animal Protection League, and Forever Changed Animal Rescue. Because of their commitment and compassion, fourteen underdogs truly took the flight of their lives, and our Super Bowl win became their brand new beginning.
