Before Dawn and Across States: A Lifesaving Journey
At 3:30 a.m., while most of the world slept, a determined network of rescuers, shelter staff, and transport partners came together in the South to save dogs who had no one else fighting for them. These were dogs who had been overlooked, forgotten, and dangerously close to losing their lives simply because their shelters had run out of time, space, and resources.
Nineteen dogs were transported from three South Carolina shelters: Saint Frances Animal Center, Williamsburg County Animal Care and Control, and Horry County Animal Care Center. These were not the easy cases; they were dogs who had waited the longest and had been marked as urgent. Many had never received a second glance, not because of who they were, but because of where they happened to live.
Later that same day, the momentum continued as we launched another mission to move those same nineteen deserving dogs from South Carolina toward their new beginnings with Freedom First Rescue in Pennsylvania. With coordination from the SE Coast SC Rescue Collaboration and the dedicated work of drivers Onn and Albert, the dogs began a multi-state journey from Myrtle Beach to Hellertown, Pennsylvania. There, they would receive the second chances they had been denied for far too long.
This transport represented what could be accomplished when people united for a purpose greater than themselves. It required donations that fueled the vehicles, provided overnight lodging, and supplied the crates that made these trips safe. It required shelters willing to keep trying, collaborations willing to fight for outcomes, and teams committed to seeing every dog through to the end of the journey.
We are deeply grateful for every individual who helped make this mission possible. Dogs like Buttercup, Hazel, Blueberry, Stanley, and Treasure were given the futures they deserved because so many people chose to act.
These nineteen lives were saved through teamwork, compassion, and an unwavering belief that every dog deserved a chance.
