A Night on the Road for Second Chances

What happens when a rescue mission is scheduled but the airplane is in maintenance? You don’t cancel. You find another way. That’s why we have rescue vans.

Our Director of Development, Jen Xu, and pilot Stephen Nur took the wheel on an 11-hour overnight drive from Myrtle Beach, SC, to East Hanover, NJ, safely transporting 24 precious animals who were at risk of euthanasia. Among them were a litter of six puppies, several black labs, a few large dogs, and three very special cats whose stories truly touched our hearts.

Kit Kat belonged to a terminally ill woman battling cancer. She could no longer care for him, but her only wish was to know he would find a safe, loving home. There were many tears before we arrived, but we promised her that Kit Kat would be going to a wonderful rescue in New Jersey that would give him the future she hoped for.

Lilith, known as the “eye kitty,” came into the shelter with a severe respiratory infection that unfortunately affected her eye. The condition had gone untreated, and the eye now needs to be removed. Thankfully, the rescue taking her in will provide the surgery she needs and give her a chance at a healthy life.

Anita Bath arrived at the shelter with a devastating leg injury, likely from being hit by a car. Though the damage couldn’t be repaired, her rescue will perform an amputation and provide her a safe, loving home.

Einstein, a dog picked up by animal control, had not had a home in a long time and arrived with severely matted hair, while many of the other dogs were emaciated, scared, or recovering from neglect. Thanks to the care of our partners, all 24 animals were safely delivered and are now on the path to new beginnings.

We are deeply grateful to our partners at SE Coast SC Rescue Collaboration, Grand Strand Humane Society, Horry County Animal Care Center, Peace, Love & Paws, Saint Francis Animal Center, Williamsburg County Animal Care and Control, Eleventh Hour Rescue, Happy Homes Animal Rescue, Humble Hounds, Mt Pleasant Animal Shelter, Pawsitive Possibilities Rescue, and Ulster County Canines. Without your tireless work, compassion, and love for these animals, missions like this could not happen.

Every mile we drove, every hour on the road, and every rescue partner who stepped in helped turn stories of loss into stories of hope. Missions like this show the real difference made for animals in need, and because of everyone involved, 24 lives now have a second chance at life.
