Regina: Overlooked, No More!
|
|
|
|
|
When her former owner lost their home, 7-year-old Regina was brought to a shelter—not just to be surrendered, but with a request to be euthanized… simply because their new housing didn’t allow dogs.
Thankfully, the shelter staff refused to give up on her and insisted on giving this sweet girl a fighting chance!
For nearly five months, Regina patiently waited in her kennel hoping someone would notice her.
She did everything she could to win potential adopters over, but day after day, this gentle soul kept getting passed by.
Everything changed when one of our incredible rescue partners saw her on a FaceTime video: "One look at Regina’s sweet eyes—the pure embodiment of peace—and I knew she was more than ready for her second chance!"
Regina and 29 other lucky dog and cat paw-sengers boarded their 1,743-mile freedom ride heading North!

After a brief stay in foster care, an amazing mother and her sons fell head over heels for this gorgeous "dainty lady".
Regina’s long wait is officially over!
She now has two human brothers to grow up with who shower her with endless belly rubs, squeaky toys, and love.

Meet Volunteer Pilot: MacKenzie Brendlen
|
|
|
MacKenzie is a proud member of Women in Aviation International and The Ninety-Nines. She hopes to share the aviation community with as many women and girls as possible.
When she's not working as an airline pilot at United Express, MacKenzie enjoys gardening, exploring local hiking trails, and of course, volunteering to fly rescue missions for Pilots To The Rescue!

One freedom flight that left a lasting impression on MacKenzie involved transporting endangered wolves from deplorable conditions. While devastating to witness, she felt deeply fulfilled to be part of such a positive outcome.
"That rescue mission lit a fire within me," says MacKenzie. "It serves as my motivation on the dozens of missions I've completed within my two years with Pilots To The Rescue."

MacKenzie discovered her passion for aviation while working on Nantucket Island, where she became friends with a local flight instructor. After spending time flying between Nantucket and New Jersey, she decided to pursue her pilot license and transition into aviation.
Before entering the field, MacKenzie had a successful career in hospitality management.
"Animals of all kinds have always been a huge part of my life," shares MacKenzie.
"My parents tell stories of me as a child where I’d beg to bring home any animal I came across. They weren’t thrilled when they learned I’d be caring for an African ball python in high school but supported my passion for animals none the less."

Future Guide Dogs Take Flight
|
|
|
|
|
This month, Pilots To The Rescue teamed up with Guiding Eyes for the Blind for an extra special mission!
Three adorable Labrador puppies—Betty, Dermot, and Gingee—boarded a flight from White Plains, NY to Sanford, FL to meet their volunteer puppy raisers, who will give them love, socialization, and foundational training over the next 14 to 16 months.
"Our Remote Puppy Raising program opens the door for dedicated volunteers across the country to help shape the future of a guide dog, regardless of where they live,” shares Leslise Stephens, Regional Puppy Manger - West at Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
“Our partnership with Pilots To The Rescue allows us to bring that opportunity to people in more communities across the country.”
During the flight, each of the puppies took turns crawling his/her way up to the cockpit to take their place as co-pawlet.
Kristen Van Der Kloot, both a volunteer pilot and a former Guiding Eyes puppy raiser herself shares, “These are such special missions because the puppies are going to make such a big difference in someone’s life."

Since Pilots To The Rescue's plane was still undergoing its annual inspection and maintenance, Kristin flew her personal plane to transport the pups down South. “Having the Cirrus SR22T for this mission was pretty great. It had plenty of space for all three puppies, who snuggled up comfortably on a little sling hammock!”
Every freedom flight brings us closer to changing lives, both for these future service dogs and the humans who will soon call them their best friend.
